Problem 15 of 16

The number of prime numbers pp such that 2p+p22^p + p^2 is also a prime number is

Solution

If p=2p = 2, 2p+p2=82^p + p^2 = 8 is not prime. If p=3p = 3, 2p+p2=172^p + p^2 = 17 is prime. If p>3p > 3, then p=6k±1p = 6k \pm 1 for some integer kk, so that p2=36k2±12k+1p^2 = 36k^2 \pm 12k + 1 is 11 more than a multiple of 33. On the other hand, when divided by 33, successive powers of 22 leave remainders of 22 and 11 alternately. Since p>3p > 3 is odd, 2p2^p is 22 more than a multiple of 33. Hence 2p+p22^p + p^2 is divisible by 33, and cannot be prime. The answer is (B).
