2021/22 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 10

Problem 10 of 16

How many 20212021-digit positive integers nn satisfy the following three conditions:

  • each digit is either 00 or 11,
  • nn is even,
  • the number of ones in the decimal representation of nn is even.

Answer choices

Solution

The first digit of the number nn should be 11 and its last digit should be 00. The 20182018 digit locations in nn, excluding the first, second, and last digits, can be filled arbitrarily with 00's and 11's. There are 220182^{2018} ways to do this. For each of these choices, the second digit of nn is then chosen to be either 00 or 11, so that there are an even number of 11's in nn altogether. Thus there are 220182^{2018} numbers nn satisfying the three properties.

Alternative Solution: The first digit of the number nn should be 11 and its last digit should be 00. There are 20192019 locations between the first and the last digit and 11, 33, 55, 77, …\ldots, or 20192019 of them may be filled with 11's. The number of possibilities is (20191)+(20193)+⋯+(20192019)=22018. \binom{2019}{1} + \binom{2019}{3} + \cdots + \binom{2019}{2019} = 2^{2018}. The last equality follows by subtracting the following identities: 22019=(1+1)2019=(20190)+(20191)+⋯+(20192018)+(20192019) 2^{2019} = (1+1)^{2019} = \binom{2019}{0} + \binom{2019}{1} + \cdots + \binom{2019}{2018} + \binom{2019}{2019} and 0=(1−1)2019=(20190)−(20191)+⋯+(20192018)−(20192019). 0 = (1-1)^{2019} = \binom{2019}{0} - \binom{2019}{1} + \cdots + \binom{2019}{2018} - \binom{2019}{2019}. The answer is (C).
