Problem 10 of 16

Let p(x)=3x4+ax2+bp(x) = 3x^4 + ax^2 + b where aa, bb are real numbers. Suppose that p(x)p(x) has exactly three distinct real roots rr, ss and tt with r<s<tr < s < t. Which one of the following statements must be true?

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

Observe that if kk is a root of p(x)p(x) then p(−k)=p(k)=0p(-k) = p(k) = 0 implying that −k-k is also a root of p(x)p(x). Thus we have r=−tr = -t, s=0s = 0 and so r<0<tr < 0 < t. This implies s+t>0s + t > 0, rt<0rt < 0, r+s<0r + s < 0 and r+t=0r + t = 0. The answer is (A).
