2022/23 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 9

Problem 9 of 16

On a farm with several barns, there are pigs and ducks, altogether 4040 legs in each barn, in all possible combinations, and such that the total number of pigs and ducks in each barn is different. A random barn is chosen; what is the probability that the total number of pigs and ducks in that barn is a prime number?

Solution

Let pp be the number of pigs and dd be the number of ducks, so 4p+2d=404p + 2d = 40 or 2p+d=202p + d = 20. From this scenario, there are 1111 different combinations for pp and dd which are (0,20)(0,20), (1,18)(1,18), (2,16)(2,16), (3,14)(3,14), (4,12)(4,12), (5,10)(5,10), (6,8)(6,8), (7,6)(7,6), (8,4)(8,4), (9,2)(9,2), and (10,0)(10,0) so we conclude that there are 1111 barns at the farm.

Therefore, there are 44 ((1,18)\bigl((1,18), (3,14)(3,14), (7,6)(7,6), and (9,2))(9,2)\bigr) out of 1111 barns such that the total number of pigs and ducks is a prime number. The answer is (B).
