Problem 3 of 16

In triangle ABCABC, AB≤1≤BC≤2≤CA≤3AB \le 1 \le BC \le 2 \le CA \le 3. The maximum area of triangle ABCABC is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

Since AB≤1AB \le 1 and BC≤2BC \le 2, the area of triangle ABCABC is at most 22. This maximum value can be attained when AB=1AB = 1 and BC=2BC = 2 and are perpendicular to each other. Now CA=5CA = \sqrt{5}, and we indeed have 2≤CA≤32 \le CA \le 3. The answer is (C).
