Problem 9 of 16

In the quadrilateral ABCDABCD, AB=CDAB = CD, AD=2AD = 2 and BC=6BC = 6. ADAD and BCBC are parallel lines at a distance 88 apart. The radius of the smallest circle which can cover ABCDABCD is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

The centre OO of the circle lies on the axis of symmetry of ABCDABCD. Let yy be its height above BCBC. Then OB2=y2+32OB^2 = y^2 + 3^2 while OA2=(8−y)2+12OA^2 = (8-y)^2 + 1^2. Equating these two values yields y=72y = \dfrac{7}{2}. Hence the radius is (72)2+32=852\sqrt{\bigl(\dfrac{7}{2}\bigr)^2 + 3^2} = \dfrac{\sqrt{85}}{2}. The answer is (C).
