Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

Let the number of stools be mm and the number of chairs be nn. Then 5m+6n=395m + 6n = 39. Hence mm is a multiple of 33 but not a multiple of 66. Moreover, 5m<395m < 39 so that m≤7m \le 7. It follows that m=3m = 3 and n=(39−3×5)÷6=4n = (39 - 3 \times 5) \div 6 = 4, so that the number of people is 3+4=73+4=7. The answer is (C).
