Solution

Let RR, rr denote the lengths of the large and respectively the small radius and EB=aEB = a, FC=bFC = b. First a=2R−2ra = 2R - 2r so that R=r+a/2R = r + a/2. If O′O' denotes the centre of the smaller circle then O′F2=O′O2+OF2O'F^2 = O'O^2 + OF^2 hence r2=a24+(r+a2−b)2. r^2 = \frac{a^2}{4} + \Bigl(r + \frac{a}{2} - b\Bigr)^2. Solving for rr we get r=(2b−a)2+a24(2b−a). r = \frac{(2b-a)^2 + a^2}{4(2b-a)}. Taking a=3a = 3, b=2b = 2 we get r=52r = \dfrac{5}{2}. The answer is (C).
