Problem 15 of 16

Points EE and FF are on the sides BCBC and CDCD respectively of the parallelogram ABCDABCD such that EBEC=23\dfrac{EB}{EC} = \dfrac{2}{3} and FCFD=14\dfrac{FC}{FD} = \dfrac{1}{4}. Let MM be the intersection of AEAE and BFBF. The value of AMME\dfrac{AM}{ME} is equal to

Solution

The parallel line to FBFB through CC intercepts ABAB at PP and AMAM intercepts CPCP at QQ. Then MQME=ME+EQME=1+EQME=1+ECEB=1+32=52 \frac{MQ}{ME} = \frac{ME + EQ}{ME} = 1 + \frac{EQ}{ME} = 1 + \frac{EC}{EB} = 1 + \frac{3}{2} = \frac{5}{2} and AMMQ=ABBP=DCFC=DF+FCFC=1+DFFC=4+1=5. \frac{AM}{MQ} = \frac{AB}{BP} = \frac{DC}{FC} = \frac{DF + FC}{FC} = 1 + \frac{DF}{FC} = 4 + 1 = 5. Hence AMME=AMMQ⋅MQME=5⋅52=12.5. \frac{AM}{ME} = \frac{AM}{MQ} \cdot \frac{MQ}{ME} = 5 \cdot \frac{5}{2} = 12.5. The answer is (D).
