Problem 10 of 16

Let DD be an arbitrary point on the side BCBC of the equilateral triangle ABCABC. Points EE and FF are on ABAB and ACAC respectively so that DE⊥ABDE \perp AB and DF⊥ACDF \perp AC and E1E_1, F1F_1 are points on BCBC such that EE1⊥BCEE_1 \perp BC and FF1⊥BCFF_1 \perp BC. If E1F1E_1F_1 has length 12\dfrac{1}{2} then the length of BCBC is

Solution

Let BC=aBC = a. We have DE1=DEcos⁡30∘=32 DEDE_1 = DE \cos 30^\circ = \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\, DE and DF1=DFcos⁡30∘=32 DFDF_1 = DF \cos 30^\circ = \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\, DF, hence E1F1=32(DE+DF)E_1F_1 = \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}(DE+DF). On the other hand DE⋅AB+DF⋅AC=2 Area(ABC)DE \cdot AB + DF \cdot AC = 2\,\mathrm{Area}(ABC) that is, a(DE+DF)=a232a(DE+DF) = a^2 \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2} and hence DE+DF=a32DE+DF = a \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}. Therefore, E1F1=3a4E_1F_1 = \dfrac{3a}{4}. Since E1F1=12E_1F_1 = \dfrac{1}{2} we must have a=23a = \dfrac{2}{3}. The answer is (A).
