Problem 14 of 16

The product of all real numbers xx that are solutions of the equation x2+x+x2+x+333=3 \sqrt[3]{x^2 + x + \sqrt[3]{x^2 + x + 3}} = 3 is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

The function f(t)=x2+x+t3f(t) = \sqrt[3]{x^2 + x + t}, t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R} is increasing hence f(f(t))=t  ⟺  f(t)=tf(f(t)) = t \iff f(t) = t that leads to the conclusion that the real solutions of the given equation and x2+x+33=3\sqrt[3]{x^2 + x + 3} = 3 are the same. The solutions of the last equation are just the solutions of the quadratic equation x2+x−24=0x^2 + x - 24 = 0, for which the product of the solutions is −24-24.

Alternative Solution: Let y=x2+x+33y = \sqrt[3]{x^2 + x + 3} then the given equation can be written as y3−3+y=27  ⟺  (y−3)(y2+3y+10)=0  ⟺  y=3 y^3 - 3 + y = 27 \iff (y-3)(y^2 + 3y + 10) = 0 \iff y = 3 and then x2+x−24=0x^2 + x - 24 = 0. The answer is (B).
