Problem 9 of 16

When x4+x5+x10+x17+x100x^4 + x^5 + x^{10} + x^{17} + x^{100} is divided by x2−1x^2 - 1 the remainder is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

The remainder must be a first degree polynomial Ax+BAx + B and if Q(x)Q(x) is the quotient then x4+x5+x10+x17+x100=Q(x)(x2−1)+Ax+B x^4 + x^5 + x^{10} + x^{17} + x^{100} = Q(x)(x^2-1) + Ax + B for any real xx. Taking x=±1x = \pm 1 in the above equation we obtain A+B=5A+B = 5 and −A+B=1-A+B = 1 hence A=2A = 2, B=3B = 3 and thus the remainder is 2x+32x+3. The answer is (C).
