AMC 12 Mock Exam 3 Problem 24

Problem 24 of 25

How many real numbers xx in the interval [0,2π][0,2\pi] satisfy cos⁡x⋅cos⁡2x⋅cos⁡4x⋅cos⁡8x=116 ?\cos x\cdot\cos2x\cdot\cos4x\cdot\cos8x=\frac1{16}\,?

Solution

Repeated use of 2sin⁡θcos⁡θ=sin⁡2θ2\sin\theta\cos\theta=\sin2\theta gives 16sin⁡xcos⁡xcos⁡2xcos⁡4xcos⁡8x=sin⁡16x16\sin x\cos x\cos2x\cos4x\cos8x=\sin16x.

Points with sin⁡x=0\sin x=0: at x=0,2πx=0,2\pi the product is 11, and at x=πx=\pi it is −1-1; none is a solution.

Otherwise the equation is equivalent to sin⁡16x=sin⁡x\sin16x=\sin x, i.e., either 16x=x+2πk16x=x+2\pi k or 16x=π−x+2πk16x=\pi-x+2\pi k:

  • x=2πk15x=\frac{2\pi k}{15}: in (0,2π)(0,2\pi) these are k=1,…,14k=1,\dots,14 (none equals π\pi): 1414 solutions.
  • x=(2k+1)π17x=\frac{(2k+1)\pi}{17}: in (0,2π)(0,2\pi) these are k=0,…,16k=0,\dots,16, excluding k=8k=8 (which gives x=πx=\pi): 1616 solutions.

The families are disjoint, because 2k15=2j+117\frac{2k}{15}=\frac{2j+1}{17} would give 34k=15(2j+1)34k=15(2j+1), even == odd. The total is 14+16=3014+16=\boxed{30}.
