Problem 10 of 16

What is the probability that the equation x2+ax+b=0x^2 + ax + b = 0 has exactly one root, when aa and bb are (not necessarily different) numbers chosen randomly from the set {1,2,3,…,100}\{1,2,3,\ldots,100\}?

Solution

The equation x2+ax+b=0x^2 + ax + b = 0 has exactly one root if and only if a2=4ba^2 = 4b. Since b≤100b \le 100, this means (a,b)=(2k,k2)(a,b) = (2k, k^2) for some 1≤k≤101 \le k \le 10. There are 1002100^2 possible pairs (a,b)(a,b) and only 1010 favourable ones, so the probability is 11000\dfrac{1}{1000}. The answer is (A).
