Problem 13 of 16

The number of points (x,y)(x,y) with integer coordinates xx and yy, which are inside the circle x2+y2=1000x^2 + y^2 = 1000, and such that ∣3x+1∣+∣x−1∣=y|3x+1| + |x-1| = y is:

Solution

If x≥1x \ge 1 then y=4xy = 4x. Writing x=k≥1x = k \ge 1 we need 17k2<100017k^2 < 1000, so k≤7k \le 7: seven points (k,4k)(k,4k).

If −13≤x<1-\dfrac{1}{3} \le x < 1 then x=0x = 0 and y=2y = 2, one interior point.

If x<−13x < -\dfrac{1}{3} then y=−4xy = -4x. Writing x=−kx = -k with k≥1k \ge 1 again gives k≤7k \le 7: seven points (−k,4k)(-k,4k).

In all, 1515 points. The answer is (D).
