2024/25 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 3

Problem 3 of 16

The number of integer pairs (x,y)(x,y) such that 1x+1y=14\dfrac{1}{x} + \dfrac{1}{y} = \dfrac{1}{4} is:

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

Rewriting 1x+1y=14\dfrac{1}{x} + \dfrac{1}{y} = \dfrac{1}{4} as (x−4)(y−4)=16(x-4)(y-4) = 16 with x≠0x \ne 0, y≠0y \ne 0, the factor x−4x-4 is one of {±1,±2,±4,±8,±16}\{\pm 1, \pm 2, \pm 4, \pm 8, \pm 16\}. This gives 1010 pairs, but x−4=−4x-4 = -4 yields x=0x = 0, which is not allowed. The other nine values are valid. The answer is (C).
