Problem 15 of 16

mm, nn are positive integers with 6≤n≤996 \le n \le 99. Subject to this condition, mn\dfrac{m}{n} is the reduced fraction that is the closest possible to 25\dfrac{2}{5}. What is the value of m+nm+n?

Solution

We have ∣25−mn∣=∣5m−2n∣5n\bigl|\frac{2}{5} - \frac{m}{n}\bigr| = \dfrac{|5m-2n|}{5n}. If ∣5m−2n∣=0|5m-2n| = 0 then n=5n=5, contradicting n≥6n \ge 6. If ∣5m−2n∣=1|5m-2n| = 1 then the error is 15n\dfrac{1}{5n}, smallest when nn is largest. This congruence requires n≡±3(mod5)n \equiv \pm 3 \pmod{5}, and the largest such nn is n=98n = 98, giving m=39m = 39 and error 15⋅98\dfrac{1}{5\cdot 98}. If ∣5m−2n∣≥2|5m-2n| \ge 2 then the error is at least 25⋅99>15⋅98\dfrac{2}{5\cdot 99} > \dfrac{1}{5\cdot 98}. Thus 3998\dfrac{39}{98} is closest, and m+n=137m+n = 137. The answer is (C).
