Problem 10 of 16

Find the number of pairs (a,b)(a,b) of integers with 1<a,b≤301 < a,b \le 30 such that log⁡ab\log_a b is an integer.

Solution

Write log⁡ab=k\log_a b = k with kk a positive integer, so b=akb = a^k and 1<a≤301 < a \le 30, 1<b≤301 < b \le 30.

If k=1k=1 then b=ab=a, giving 2929 pairs (a=2,…,30a=2,\ldots,30).

If k=2k=2 then a2≤30a^2 \le 30, so a∈{2,3,4,5}a \in \{2,3,4,5\}: 44 pairs.

If k≥3k \ge 3 then a3≤30a^3 \le 30, so a∈{2,3}a \in \{2,3\}. For a=2a=2 one has 3≤k≤43 \le k \le 4; for a=3a=3 one has k=3k=3. This is 33 pairs.

Total: 29+4+3=3629+4+3 = 36. The answer is (D).
