Problem 13 of 16

Find the number of pairs (n,C)(n,C) of positive integers such that C≤50C \le 50 and the expression n2+Cn^2 + C is a perfect square.

Solution

Write n2+C=(n+m)2n^2 + C = (n+m)^2 with m≥1m \ge 1, so C=2mn+m2≤50C = 2mn + m^2 \le 50, hence n≤50−m22mn \le \dfrac{50-m^2}{2m}. For each mm with m2<50m^2 < 50 (i.e. m=1,…,7m=1,\ldots,7) the number of positive integers nn is ⌊(50−m2)/(2m)⌋\bigl\lfloor(50-m^2)/(2m)\bigr\rfloor, and ∑m=17⌊50−m22m⌋=24+11+6+4+2+1+0=48. \sum_{m=1}^{7} \Bigl\lfloor \frac{50-m^2}{2m} \Bigr\rfloor = 24+11+6+4+2+1+0 = 48. The answer is (E).
