Solution

We have AM=MB=1/2AM = MB = 1/2, NC=1/4NC = 1/4 and DN=3/4DN = 3/4. Since AB∥DCAB \parallel DC, △AMP∼△NDP\triangle AMP \sim \triangle NDP with height ratio AMDN=23\dfrac{AM}{DN} = \dfrac{2}{3}. The heights from PP to AMAM and DNDN sum to 11, so they are 2/52/5 and 3/53/5. Thus Area(△DNP)=12⋅35⋅34=940. \mathrm{Area}(\triangle DNP) = \frac{1}{2}\cdot\frac{3}{5}\cdot\frac{3}{4} = \frac{9}{40}. Likewise △BMQ∼△NCQ\triangle BMQ \sim \triangle NCQ with base ratio 22, so the height of △CQN\triangle CQN from QQ is 1/31/3 and Area(△CQN)=12⋅13⋅14=124. \mathrm{Area}(\triangle CQN) = \frac{1}{2}\cdot\frac{1}{3}\cdot\frac{1}{4} = \frac{1}{24}. Therefore Area(MPNQ)=Area(△DMC)−Area(△DPN)−Area(△CQN)=12−940−124=730. \mathrm{Area}(MPNQ) = \mathrm{Area}(\triangle DMC) - \mathrm{Area}(\triangle DPN) - \mathrm{Area}(\triangle CQN) = \frac{1}{2} - \frac{9}{40} - \frac{1}{24} = \frac{7}{30}. The answer is (B).
