Problem 12 of 16

PP is a point inside an acute triangle ABCABC. DD, EE and FF are the feet of the perpendiculars from PP on BCBC, CACA and ABAB respectively. If BD=1BD = 1, DC=10DC = 10, CE=6CE = 6, EA=9EA = 9 and AF=13AF = 13, the length of FBFB is

Solution

By Pythagoras' Theorem, BD2−DC2=(BP2−PD2)−(CP2−PD2)=BP2−CP2BD^2 - DC^2 = (BP^2 - PD^2) - (CP^2 - PD^2) = BP^2 - CP^2. Similarly, CE2−EA2=CP2−AP2CE^2 - EA^2 = CP^2 - AP^2 and AF2−BF2=AP2−BP2AF^2 - BF^2 = AP^2 - BP^2. Summing these equations yields (BD2+CE2+AF2)−(DC2+EA2+FB2)=0. (BD^2 + CE^2 + AF^2) - (DC^2 + EA^2 + FB^2) = 0. Hence FB2=(12+62+132)−(102+92)=52FB^2 = (1^2 + 6^2 + 13^2) - (10^2 + 9^2) = 5^2 so that FB=5FB = 5. The answer is (E).
