Problem 14 of 16

PP is a point inside a convex quadrilateral ABCDABCD of area 168168 such that PA=9PA = 9, PB=PD=12PB = PD = 12 and PC=5PC = 5. The perimeter of the quadrilateral is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

Note that AC≤AP+PC=14AC \le AP + PC = 14, BD≤BP+PD=24BD \le BP + PD = 24 and the area of ABCDABCD is at most 12AC⋅BD≤168\dfrac{1}{2} AC \cdot BD \le 168. Thus we must have equality, so that PP is the point of intersection of the diagonals which must be perpendicular to each other. By Pythagoras' Theorem, AB=AD=92+122=15AB = AD = \sqrt{9^2 + 12^2} = 15 and CB=CD=52+122=13CB = CD = \sqrt{5^2 + 12^2} = 13. Hence the perimeter of ABCDABCD is 2(15+13)=562(15 + 13) = 56. The answer is (B).
