Problem 10 of 16

Consider polynomials p(x)p(x) of degree 55 with leading coefficient 11 such that p(−x)=−p(x)p(-x) = -p(x) for all real xx. If the roots of p(x)p(x) include −1-1 and 2\sqrt{2}, the value of p(2)p(2) is

Answer choices

Solution

From p(−x)=−p(x)p(-x) = -p(x) we have p(0)=−p(0)p(0) = -p(0) implying p(0)=0p(0) = 0, thus x=0x = 0 is a root. Further, p(1)=−p(−1)=0p(1) = -p(-1) = 0 and p(−2)=−p(2)=0p(-\sqrt{2}) = -p(\sqrt{2}) = 0 implying 11 and −2-\sqrt{2} are also roots. Since p(x)p(x) is of degree 55 with leading coefficient 11, there is a unique polynomial satisfying the given conditions, namely p(x)=x(x−1)(x+1)(x−2)(x+2)=x(x2−1)(x2−2). p(x) = x(x-1)(x+1)(x-\sqrt{2})(x+\sqrt{2}) = x(x^2-1)(x^2-2). Thus, p(2)=2(22−1)(22−2)=12p(2) = 2(2^2 - 1)(2^2 - 2) = 12. The answer is (C).
