Problem 4 of 16

A sequence is defined by a0=0a_0 = 0 and an+1=an−3an−2a_{n+1} = \dfrac{a_n - 3}{a_n - 2} for all integers n≥0n \ge 0. Then a2018a_{2018} is

Solution

We have a0=0a_0 = 0, a1=32a_1 = \dfrac{3}{2}, a2=32−332−2=3a_2 = \dfrac{\frac{3}{2} - 3}{\frac{3}{2} - 2} = 3, a3=0a_3 = 0, ⋯\cdots. Hence the sequence repeats after 33 steps and a3k=0a_{3k} = 0 for all positive integers kk. Thus a2016=0a_{2016} = 0 and hence a2018=3a_{2018} = 3. The answer is (D).
