2018/19 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 6

Problem 6 of 16

A student writes a multiple choice exam. The exam contains 1616 questions and the score is 55 points for a correct answer, 22 points for no answer and 00 points for an incorrect answer. Each student also receives 2020 bonus points. If a student scores 7878 points, how many questions were answered correctly?

Solution

Let xx be the number of correct answers and yy the number of non-answered questions. Thus, 0≤x+y≤160 \le x + y \le 16 and 20+5x+2y=78  ⟺  5x+2y=58. 20 + 5x + 2y = 78 \iff 5x + 2y = 58. Since 5x=2(29−y)5x = 2(29 - y), 55 should be a divisor of 29−y29 - y, hence y∈{4,9,14}y \in \{4, 9, 14\}. The only convenient value for yy is 44 and hence the solution is x=10x = 10, y=4y = 4. This gives 1010 correct answers, 22 wrong answers and 44 no answers. The answer is (C).

Alternative solution: The total for a perfect paper is 100100. If the student didn't answer aa questions and the answers for bb questions were not correct, then 3a+5b=22 3a + 5b = 22 where 0≤a+b≤160 \le a + b \le 16. It is clear that b≤4b \le 4 and since 5b≡1(mod3)5b \equiv 1 \pmod{3} one obtains b=2b = 2 and then a=4a = 4. Therefore, the remaining 1010 questions are correct.
