Problem 14 of 16

The positive integers from 11 to 999999 are written in a row (with no spaces) in increasing order: 12345⋯998999. 12345\cdots 998999. How many times does the sequence of characters “3131” occur?

Solution

For the first 100100 positive integers the sequence “3131” occurs twice, once from 1313 to 1414 and again as 3131. Now, let xx be a three digit number and suppose “3131” appears in x(x+1)x(x+1) with the “33” appearing in either the ones, tens or hundreds place of xx. If xx ends in 33, then x+1x+1 begins with 11, which implies x=1a3x = 1a3. Each of a∈{0,1,…,9}a \in \{0,1,\ldots,9\} is possible. If xx has tens digit 33, then we must have x=a31x = a31. Each of a∈{1,2,…,9}a \in \{1,2,\ldots,9\} is possible. Finally, if xx begins with 33, then we must have x=31ax = 31a. Each of a∈{0,1,…,9}a \in \{0,1,\ldots,9\} is possible. Thus, the total number of occurrences of “3131” is 2+10+9+10=312 + 10 + 9 + 10 = 31. The answer is (E).
