Problem 13 of 16

Jane has 200200 marbles of various colours. She splits them into groups of the same colour, and she observes that each group has a different number of marbles. The maximum number of groups she can have is

Solution

Let nn be the number of groups, and let us order the groups increasingly by the number of marbles.

The first group has at least 11 marble, the second group has at least 22 marbles, …\ldots, the last group has at least nn marbles. In total she has at least 1+2+3+⋯+n=n(n+1)21+2+3+\cdots+n = \dfrac{n(n+1)}{2} marbles. Therefore, n(n+1)2≤200. \frac{n(n+1)}{2} \le 200. By inspection we see that n=20n = 20 is too large, but n=19n = 19 is the maximal solution.

n=19n = 19 is an acceptable solution, as she could have groups of 1,2,3,…,181, 2, 3, \ldots, 18 and 2929 marbles. The answer is (A).
