Problem 3 of 16

Two rectangles have the same area. In the first rectangle the ratio of the long edge to the short edge is 3:13 : 1 and in the second rectangle these edges are in a ratio of 4:34 : 3. Then the ratio of the perimeter of the first rectangle to the perimeter of the second rectangle is

Solution

We can let the first rectangle be 33 by 11, and the second rectangle be 4k4k by 3k3k for some kk. The areas are the same, so 3=12k23 = 12k^2, so k=12k = \dfrac{1}{2}. Then the ratio of the perimeter of the first rectangle to the perimeter of the second rectangle is (3+1+3+1):(2+32+2+32)(3+1+3+1) : \bigl(2 + \dfrac{3}{2} + 2 + \dfrac{3}{2}\bigr), that is 8:78:7. The answer is (B).
