2020/21 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 2

Problem 2 of 16

How many integers xx satisfy the inequality x2−61x2−16≤0\dfrac{x^2 - 61}{x^2 - 16} \le 0?

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

We should have 16<x2≤6116 < x^2 \le 61, hence xx lies in [−61,−4)∪(4,61]\bigl[-\sqrt{61}, -4\bigr) \cup \bigl(4, \sqrt{61}\bigr]. Since xx is an integer, it may be ±5\pm 5, ±6\pm 6, ±7\pm 7. The answer is (C).
