AMC 12 Mock Exam 2 Problem 12

Problem 12 of 25

Rectangle ABCDABCD has AB=12AB=12 and BC=5BC=5. Point EE lies on side CD‾\overline{CD} with DE=4DE=4. Segment BE‾\overline{BE} meets diagonal AC‾\overline{AC} at FF, as shown (the figure is not necessarily drawn to scale). What is the area of the shaded triangle BCFBCF?

Solution

Since AB‾∥CE‾\overline{AB}\parallel\overline{CE}, triangles FABFAB and FCEFCE are similar, with CE=12−4=8CE=12-4=8 and AB=12AB=12. Hence CFFA=CEAB=812=23\frac{CF}{FA}=\frac{CE}{AB}=\frac{8}{12}=\frac23, so CF=25 CACF=\frac25\,CA.

Triangles BCFBCF and BCABCA share the vertex BB, and their bases CFCF and CACA lie on the same line, so their areas are in the ratio CFCA=25\frac{CF}{CA}=\frac25. Since [BCA]=12⋅12⋅5=30[BCA]=\frac12\cdot12\cdot5=30, the area of △BCF\triangle BCF is 25⋅30=12\frac25\cdot30=\boxed{12}.
