AMC 12 Mock Exam 2 Problem 23

Problem 23 of 25

In triangle ABCABC, AB=7AB=7, AC=8AC=8, and BC=9BC=9. The bisector of ∠BAC\angle BAC meets BC‾\overline{BC} at DD. A circle passes through AA and is tangent to line BCBC at DD. This circle meets AB‾\overline{AB} again at EE and AC‾\overline{AC} again at FF, as shown (the figure is not necessarily drawn to scale). What is EFEF?

Solution

By the angle bisector theorem, BD=715⋅9=215BD=\frac{7}{15}\cdot9=\frac{21}5 and CD=815⋅9=245CD=\frac{8}{15}\cdot9=\frac{24}5.

Line BCBC is tangent to the circle at DD, so the power of BB gives BD2=BE⋅BABD^2=BE\cdot BA, i.e., BE=441/257=6325BE=\frac{441/25}{7}=\frac{63}{25} and AE=7−6325=11225AE=7-\frac{63}{25}=\frac{112}{25}. Similarly CD2=CF⋅CACD^2=CF\cdot CA gives CF=576/258=7225CF=\frac{576/25}{8}=\frac{72}{25} and AF=8−7225=12825AF=8-\frac{72}{25}=\frac{128}{25}. (Both EE and FF lie on the sides, since BE<BABE<BA and CF<CACF<CA.)

Thus AEAB=112175=1625\frac{AE}{AB}=\frac{112}{175}=\frac{16}{25} and AFAC=128200=1625\frac{AF}{AC}=\frac{128}{200}=\frac{16}{25}, so △AEF∼△ABC\triangle AEF\sim\triangle ABC (SAS) with ratio 1625\frac{16}{25}, and EF=1625⋅9=14425EF=\frac{16}{25}\cdot9=\boxed{\tfrac{144}{25}}.

(In general AEAB=1−BD2AB2=1−(ab+c)2=AFAC\frac{AE}{AB}=1-\frac{BD^2}{AB^2}=1-\left(\frac{a}{b+c}\right)^2=\frac{AF}{AC}, so EF‾∥BC‾\overline{EF}\parallel\overline{BC} for every triangle.)
