AMC 12 Mock Exam 5 Problem 24

Problem 24 of 25

How many polynomials of the form x3+ax2+bx+cx^3+ax^2+bx+c, where aa, bb, and cc are integers, have the property that each of their three roots (counted with multiplicity, possibly nonreal) lies on the unit circle ∣z∣=1|z|=1 in the complex plane?

Solution

A cubic with real coefficients has a real root, which must be 11 or −1-1. So the polynomial is (x−ε)Q(x)(x-\varepsilon)Q(x) with ε=±1\varepsilon=\pm1 and Q(x)=x2+px+qQ(x)=x^2+px+q monic with integer coefficients (by polynomial division by x−εx-\varepsilon), whose two roots lie on the unit circle.

Quadratics QQ. If QQ has nonreal roots w,wˉw,\bar w, then q=∣w∣2=1q=|w|^2=1 and p=−2Re⁡wp=-2\operatorname{Re}w with ∣p∣<2|p|<2: Q∈{x2+1, x2+x+1, x2−x+1}Q\in\{x^2+1,\ x^2+x+1,\ x^2-x+1\}. If QQ has real roots, they are ±1\pm1: Q∈{(x−1)2, (x+1)2, x2−1}Q\in\{(x-1)^2,\ (x+1)^2,\ x^2-1\}. That is 66 quadratics.

Products. The 2⋅6=122\cdot6=12 products (x∓1)Q(x)(x\mp1)Q(x) give each cubic once, except that (x−1)(x2−1)=(x+1)(x−1)2(x-1)(x^2-1)=(x+1)(x-1)^2 and (x+1)(x2−1)=(x−1)(x+1)2(x+1)(x^2-1)=(x-1)(x+1)^2 are each produced twice. The distinct cubics number 12−2=1012-2=\boxed{10}: (x−1)3, (x+1)3, (x−1)2(x+1), (x+1)2(x−1), (x±1)(x2+1), (x±1)(x2+x+1), (x±1)(x2−x+1).(x-1)^3,\ (x+1)^3,\ (x-1)^2(x+1),\ (x+1)^2(x-1),\ (x\pm1)(x^2+1),\ (x\pm1)(x^2+x+1),\ (x\pm1)(x^2-x+1).
