Problem 15 of 16

The lengths of the sides of triangle ABCABC are consecutive positive integers. DD is the midpoint of BCBC and ADAD is perpendicular to the bisector of ∠C\angle C. The product of the lengths of the three sides is

Solution

Let ADAD intersect the bisector of ∠C\angle C at GG. Then ∠CGA=90∘=∠CGD\angle CGA = 90^\circ = \angle CGD, ∠GCA=∠GCD\angle GCA = \angle GCD and GC=GCGC = GC. Hence triangles GCAGCA and GCDGCD are congruent, so that AC=DCAC = DC. It follows that we have BC=2DC=2ACBC = 2DC = 2AC. Now among three consecutive positive integers, one is double another. This is only possible if the integers are 11, 22 and 33, or 22, 33 and 44. The former does not yield a triangle. Hence AC=2AC = 2, AB=3AB = 3 and BC=4BC = 4, so that AB⋅BC⋅CA=24AB \cdot BC \cdot CA = 24. The answer is (A).
