Problem 9 of 16

A lucky number is a positive integer nn such that 77 is the largest divisor of nn which is less than nn. The number of lucky numbers is

Solution

Since a lucky number nn is divisible by 77, it has the form n=7kn = 7k for some positive integer kk. If kk is not a prime number, then it has a divisor hh where 1<h<k1 < h < k, and 7h7h is a divisor of nn larger than 77 but not equal to nn. Hence kk must be a prime number. Moreover, it cannot be greater than 77. Hence there are only 44 lucky numbers, namely, 1414, 2121, 3535 and 4949. The answer is (D).
