2012/13 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 11

Problem 11 of 16

ABCDABCD is a rectangle such that AD−AB=15AD - AB = 15 cm. PQRSPQRS is a square inside ABCDABCD whose sides are parallel to those of the rectangle, with PP closest to AA and QQ closest to BB. The total area of APSDAPSD and BQRCBQRC is 363363 cm2^2 while the total area of APQBAPQB and CRSDCRSD is 11131113 cm2^2. What, in cm2^2, is the area of PQRSPQRS?

Solution

We shade the regions APQBAPQB and CRSDCRSD while leaving the regions APSDAPSD and BQRCBQRC unshaded. Extend the sides of PQRSPQRS to the perimeter of ABCDABCD, creating four rectangles at the corners each of which consists of two congruent triangles, one shaded and one unshaded. The difference between the total area of the unshaded regions (not counting PQRSPQRS) and the total area of the shaded regions is 1113−363=7501113 - 363 = 750 cm2^2. The difference in the lengths of ADAD and ABAB is 1515 cm. Hence the side length of PQRSPQRS is 750÷15=50750 \div 15 = 50 cm, and the area of PQRSPQRS is 25002500 cm2^2. The answer is (C).
