Problem 4 of 16

A quadratic polynomial f(x)f(x) satisfies f(0)=1f(0) = 1, f(1)=0f(1) = 0 and f(2)=3f(2) = 3. What is the value of f(3)f(3)?

Solution

Let f(x)=ax2+bx+cf(x) = ax^2 + bx + c. Then 1=f(0)=c1 = f(0) = c, 0=f(1)=a+b+c0 = f(1) = a + b + c and 3=f(2)=4a+2b+c3 = f(2) = 4a + 2b + c. We have c=1c = 1, a+b=−1a + b = -1 and 2a+b=12a + b = 1. Hence a=2a = 2 and b=−3b = -3, so that f(3)=10f(3) = 10. The answer is (D).
