2012/13 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 5

Problem 5 of 16

ABCDABCD is a square. EE and FF are points on the segment BCBC such that BE=EF=FC=4BE = EF = FC = 4 cm. The segments AFAF and DEDE intersect at GG. What, in cm2^2, is the area of triangle EFGEFG?

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

Triangles GADGAD and GFEGFE are similar, with AD=3EFAD = 3EF. Hence the vertical height of triangle EFGEFG is 13\dfrac{1}{3} of the vertical height of triangle ADGADG. Hence it is equal to 14AB=3\dfrac{1}{4}AB = 3 cm so that the area of triangle EFGEFG is 12×3×4=6\dfrac{1}{2} \times 3 \times 4 = 6 cm2^2. The answer is (A).
