Problem 14 of 16

The incircle of triangle ABCABC is tangent to ABAB and ACAC at FF and EE respectively. If BC=1BC = 1, ∠A=90∘\angle A = 90^\circ and ∠B≠∠C\angle B \ne \angle C, what is the distance from the midpoint of BCBC to EFEF?

Solution

Let MM be the midpoint of BCBC and DD the point where the circle is tangent to BCBC. Let B′B', C′C' and M′M' be the respective projections of BB, CC and MM on EFEF. Now AEFAEF is a right isosceles triangle. Hence so are BB′FBB'F and CC′ECC'E. Hence BB′=BF2BB' = \dfrac{BF}{\sqrt{2}} and CC′=CE2CC' = \dfrac{CE}{\sqrt{2}}, so that MM′=12(BB′+CC′)=122(BF+CE)=122(BD+CD)=BC22=24. MM' = \frac{1}{2}(BB' + CC') = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{2}}(BF + CE) = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{2}}(BD + CD) = \frac{BC}{2\sqrt{2}} = \frac{\sqrt{2}}{4}. The answer is (A).
