Problem 10 of 16

Suppose that 162013=ab16^{2013} = a^b, where aa and bb are positive integers. The number of possible values of aa is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

Since 162013=24×201316^{2013} = 2^{4 \times 2013}, aa must be of the form 2k2^k where kk is a positive integer divisor of 4×2013=22×3×11×614 \times 2013 = 2^2 \times 3 \times 11 \times 61. The prime factorization of kk may contain up to two 22s, one 33, one 1111 and one 6161, so that there are (2+1)(1+1)3=24(2+1)(1+1)^3 = 24 possible values of kk, and therefore of aa. The answer is (E).
