Problem 5 of 16

ABCDABCD is a quadrilateral with AB=12AB = 12 and CD=18CD = 18. Moreover, ABAB is parallel to CDCD and both ∠ADC\angle ADC and ∠BCD\angle BCD are less than 90∘90^\circ. PP and QQ are points on side CDCD such that AD=APAD = AP and BC=BQBC = BQ. The length of PQPQ is

Solution

From AA and BB, drop perpendiculars onto CDCD at the points EE and FF respectively. Since both ∠ADC\angle ADC and ∠BCD\angle BCD are less than 90∘90^\circ, EE and FF do lie on the segment CDCD. Note that DE+FC=CD−EF=CD−AB=6. DE + FC = CD - EF = CD - AB = 6. Since ED=EPED = EP and FC=FQFC = FQ, EP+FQ=6<12=EFEP + FQ = 6 < 12 = EF, PP is closer to EE than QQ and QQ is closer to FF than PP. Therefore, PQ=EF−(EP+FQ)=12−6=6PQ = EF - (EP + FQ) = 12 - 6 = 6. The answer is (A).
