Problem 8 of 16

Let ABCDABCD be a quadrilateral with ∠DAB=∠CBA=90∘\angle DAB = \angle CBA = 90^\circ. Suppose there is a point PP on side ABAB such that ∠ADP=∠CDP\angle ADP = \angle CDP and ∠BCP=∠DCP\angle BCP = \angle DCP. If AD=8AD = 8 and BC=18BC = 18, the perimeter of the quadrilateral ABCDABCD is

Solution

Since ∠DAB+∠CBA=180∘\angle DAB + \angle CBA = 180^\circ, ADAD is parallel to BCBC. Therefore, ∠ADC+∠BCD=180∘\angle ADC + \angle BCD = 180^\circ. Hence ∠PDC+∠PCD=90∘\angle PDC + \angle PCD = 90^\circ. Consequently, ∠DPC=90∘\angle DPC = 90^\circ. Let QQ be the foot of the perpendicular on CDCD from PP. Note that triangle PDAPDA is congruent to triangle PDQPDQ, and triangle PCBPCB is congruent to triangle PCQPCQ. Hence DQ=DA=8DQ = DA = 8, CQ=CB=18CQ = CB = 18 and PA=PQ=PBPA = PQ = PB. Since ∠DPC=90∘\angle DPC = 90^\circ, triangle DPQDPQ is similar to triangle PCQPCQ. Hence DQQP=PQQC\dfrac{DQ}{QP} = \dfrac{PQ}{QC}. Therefore, PQ2=8×18=144PQ^2 = 8 \times 18 = 144 and PQ=12PQ = 12. The perimeter of ABCDABCD is therefore AP+PB+BC+CQ+QD+DA=12+12+18+18+8+8=76AP + PB + BC + CQ + QD + DA = 12 + 12 + 18 + 18 + 8 + 8 = 76. The answer is (D).
