Problem 14 of 16

The number of pairs (x,y)(x, y) of integers satisfying the equation x2+y2+xy−x+y=2x^2 + y^2 + xy - x + y = 2 is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

The equation can be written as x2+(y−1)x+y2+y−2=0x^2 + (y-1)x + y^2 + y - 2 = 0. By the Quadratic Formula, the solutions are x=−(y−1)±(y−1)2−4(y2+y−2)2=−(y−1)±−3(y−1)(y+3)2. x = \frac{-(y-1) \pm \sqrt{(y-1)^2 - 4(y^2 + y - 2)}}{2} = \frac{-(y-1) \pm \sqrt{-3(y-1)(y+3)}}{2}. These are real if and only if (y+3)(y−1)≤0(y+3)(y-1) \le 0. Since yy is an integer, it must be one of −3-3, −2-2, −1-1, 00 and 11. If y=−3y = -3, then x=2x = 2. If y=−2y = -2, then x=0x = 0 or 33. If y=−1y = -1, xx is not an integer. If y=0y = 0, then x=−1x = -1 or 22. Finally, if y=1y = 1, then x=0x = 0. The answer is (D).
