Problem 11 of 16

The following statements are made about the integers aa, bb, cc, dd and ee: (i) abab is even and cc is odd; (ii) bcbc is even and dd is odd; (iii) cdcd is even and ee is odd; (iv) dede is even and aa is odd; (v) eaea is even and bb is odd. The maximum number of these statements which may be correct is

Solution

If aa, cc and dd are odd while bb and ee are even, then (i), (ii) and (iv) are all correct. Suppose at least four statements are correct. By symmetry, we may assume that they are (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv). However, by (i) and (ii), cc and dd are both odd, and yet by (iii), cdcd is even. This is a contradiction. The answer is (C).
