Problem 15 of 16

A triangle ABCABC with AB=7AB = 7, BC=8BC = 8 and CA=10CA = 10 has an interior point PP such that ∠APB=∠BPC=∠CPA=120∘\angle APB = \angle BPC = \angle CPA = 120^\circ. Let r1r_1, r2r_2 and r3r_3 be the radii of the circles passing through the vertices of triangles PABPAB, PBCPBC and PCAPCA respectively. The value of r12+r22+r32r_1^2 + r_2^2 + r_3^2 is

Solution

Let OO be the centre of the circle passing through the vertices of triangle PABPAB. Note that since ∠APB>90∘\angle APB > 90^\circ, OO lies on the perpendicular bisector of ABAB outside of triangle PABPAB. Since OA=OP=OBOA = OP = OB, ∠AOB=∠AOP+∠POB=180∘−2∠APO+180∘−2∠BPO=360∘−2∠APB=120∘. \angle AOB = \angle AOP + \angle POB = 180^\circ - 2\angle APO + 180^\circ - 2\angle BPO = 360^\circ - 2\angle APB = 120^\circ. Hence AB=3 OAAB = \sqrt{3}\,OA so that OA=AB3OA = \dfrac{AB}{\sqrt{3}}. It follows that r12=AB23r_1^2 = \dfrac{AB^2}{3}. Similarly, r22=BC23r_2^2 = \dfrac{BC^2}{3} and r32=CA23r_3^2 = \dfrac{CA^2}{3}. Hence r12+r22+r32=72+82+1023=71. r_1^2 + r_2^2 + r_3^2 = \frac{7^2 + 8^2 + 10^2}{3} = 71. The answer is (A).
