Problem 10 of 16

In a trapezoid ABCDABCD, with ADAD parallel to BCBC the diagonals intersect at OO. If the area of △AOD\triangle AOD is 916\dfrac{9}{16} of the area of the trapezoid then the ratio of the areas of triangles AODAOD to BOCBOC is equal to

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

Let area(AOD)=a\mathrm{area}(AOD) = a, area(BOC)=b\mathrm{area}(BOC) = b, area(AOB)=area(COD)=c\mathrm{area}(AOB) = \mathrm{area}(COD) = c. If ab=x\dfrac{a}{b} = x then ac=AOOC=cb\dfrac{a}{c} = \dfrac{AO}{OC} = \dfrac{c}{b}, so ac=cb=x\dfrac{a}{c} = \dfrac{c}{b} = \sqrt{x}, hence area(AOD)area(ABCD)=aa+b+2c=ab2cb+ab+1=x(x+1)2=916. \frac{\mathrm{area}(AOD)}{\mathrm{area}(ABCD)} = \frac{a}{a + b + 2c} = \frac{\frac{a}{b}}{2\frac{c}{b} + \frac{a}{b} + 1} = \frac{x}{(\sqrt{x} + 1)^2} = \frac{9}{16}. Solving for xx one obtains x=9x = 9. The answer is (C).
