2017/18 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 13

Problem 13 of 16

Let SS be a subset of non-negative integers which contains 00, and such that for any number xx in SS, 3x3x and 3x+13x + 1 are also in SS. The least possible number of elements of SS less than 20172017 is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

If the elements of SS are written in base 33 then the conditions of the problem translate into, if a1a2⋯an‾(3)∈S\overline{a_1 a_2 \cdots a_n}_{(3)} \in S, then a1a2⋯an0‾(3)∈S\overline{a_1 a_2 \cdots a_n 0}_{(3)} \in S and a1a2⋯an1‾(3)∈S\overline{a_1 a_2 \cdots a_n 1}_{(3)} \in S. Hence SS should contain all the numbers which can be written in base 33 only by using 00 or 11. Since 2⋅36<2017<372 \cdot 3^6 < 2017 < 3^7 we conclude that the largest element in SS that is less than 20172017 is 1111111(3)1111111_{(3)}. There will be a total of 27=1282^7 = 128 numbers in SS having the requested property. The answer is (B).
