2017/18 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 3

Problem 3 of 16

A vertical pole is 1212 m from a straight road. Mark is currently on the road 3737 m from the pole.

Figure for this problem

How many metres does Mark have to walk on the road before he is 2020 m from the pole?

Solution

Let DD be the point on the road closest to the pole. Then the distance between the pole and DD is 1212 m. At first, Mark is 372−122=1369−144=1225=35 \sqrt{37^2 - 12^2} = \sqrt{1369 - 144} = \sqrt{1225} = 35 m from DD. When he is 2020 m from the pole, Mark is 202−122=400−144=256=16 \sqrt{20^2 - 12^2} = \sqrt{400 - 144} = \sqrt{256} = 16 m from DD. Hence, Mark walked 35−16=1935 - 16 = 19 m. The answer is (B). (Notice that Mark could pass point DD when he is 2020 metres from the pole. In this case Mark has to walk 35+16=5135 + 16 = 51 m.)
