Problem 11 of 16

The area of the quadrilateral bounded by the graphs of the functions y=∣x−a∣y = |x - a|, with 0<a<40 < a < 4, and y=2−∣x−2∣y = 2 - |x - 2| is 158\dfrac{15}{8}. The smallest value of aa is

Solution

Graphing the functions, we conclude that two of the vertices of the quadrilateral are A=(2,2)A = (2,2) and C=(a,0)C = (a,0). The other two vertices B=(a2,a2)B = \bigl(\dfrac{a}{2}, \dfrac{a}{2}\bigr) and D=(4+a2,4−a2)D = \bigl(\dfrac{4+a}{2}, \dfrac{4-a}{2}\bigr) are at the intersection of the lines y=xy = x, y=a−xy = a - x and respectively y=4−xy = 4 - x, y=x−ay = x - a. The area of the quadrilateral ABCDABCD is 4−a24−(4−a)24=4a−a22. 4 - \frac{a^2}{4} - \frac{(4-a)^2}{4} = \frac{4a - a^2}{2}. Solving the equation 4a−a22=158\dfrac{4a - a^2}{2} = \dfrac{15}{8} one obtains a=32a = \dfrac{3}{2}, a=52a = \dfrac{5}{2}. The answer is (D).
