Problem 13 of 16

In a regular polygon A1A2…A21A_1A_2\ldots A_{21} the number of triangles AiAjAkA_i A_j A_k having an angle greater than 90∘90^\circ is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

The number of triangles A1AjAkA_1 A_j A_k with ∠A1=180∘21(k−j)>90∘\angle A_1 = \frac{180^\circ}{21}(k-j) > 90^\circ is the number of pairs (j,k)(j,k) with k−j>21/2k-j > 21/2 and 2≤j<k≤212 \le j < k \le 21. This yields 9+8+⋯+1=459+8+\cdots+1 = 45 triangles with an obtuse angle at A1A_1. The same count holds at each of the 2121 vertices, so the total is 45⋅21=94545 \cdot 21 = 945. The answer is (B).
