Problem 9 of 16

Let f(x)=x2+8x+13f(x) = x^2 + 8x + 13 with xx a real number. The smallest possible value of f(f(f(f(f(x)))))f(f(f(f(f(x))))) is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

Write f(x)=(x+4)2−3f(x) = (x+4)^2 - 3, so f(x)≥−3f(x) \ge -3 for any real xx. The function ff is increasing on [−4,∞)[-4,\infty), hence f(f(x))≥f(−3)=−2f(f(x)) \ge f(-3) = -2, f(f(f(x)))≥f(−2)=1f(f(f(x))) \ge f(-2) = 1, f(f(f(f(x))))≥f(1)=22f(f(f(f(x)))) \ge f(1) = 22, and f(f(f(f(f(x)))))≥f(22)=673f(f(f(f(f(x))))) \ge f(22) = 673. This lower bound is attained at x=−4x = -4. The answer is (E).
